  2. THE NEW RUSSIA

  4. The last three years
  5. have been the most
  6. confusing time in Russian
  7. history since the original
  8. Bolshevik revolution in
  9. 1917, and travel to and
  10. from Russia has been
  11. radically effected.
  12. The Soviet Union has at
  13. long last ceased to exist
  14. and in its place are a
  15. myriad of smaller states
  16. loosely hung together around
  17. the CIS (or Commonwealth of
  18. Independent States) - what
  19. the final shape of the
  20. things will be we don't
  21. know as the situation is
  22. very fluid.

  24. However for travel purposes
  25. it is now possible to travel
  26. to the following totally
  27. independent countries in
  28. what was formerly Russia:
  29.  
  30. Latvia,
  31. Lithuania,
  32. Estonia,
  33. Byelorussia,
  34. Ukraine,
  35. Moldavia(?),
  36. Russia
  37. plus a number of other
  38. countries in the Caucasus.
  39. east of the Urals a
  40. number of independent
  41. asiatic states are also
  42. emerging.

  44. Travel to Russia is still
  45. possible through the newly
  46. created Air Russia 
  47. and Aeroflot from
  48. Heathrow to Moscow.This is
  49. a joint venture between BA
  50. and Aeroflot.

  52. Until the situation,both
  53. economic and political
  54. stabilises travel throughout
  55. the former Soviet Republics
  56. is a little risky.
